Shipwreck Trails

1733 Spanish Galleon Trail

A vintage nautical map with coastal details and compass lines.

In 1733, a ferocious hurricane ravaged the Spanish treasure fleet, scattering its wreckage across 80 miles of the Florida Keys. Decades later, with the advent of scuba diving and the discovery of the first wreck in the late 1940s, treasure hunters descended upon the area, leading to disorganized excavation and the loss of valuable historical context. Today, these shipwrecks, despite their tumultuous past, have transformed into some of the oldest and most thriving artificial reefs in the Keys.
